Collectors Corner

I have collected vintage cars for as long as I can remember.  My first one was a Shredded Wheat van free with tokens off the cereal packets and after that I started to collect them as I saw them in places I visited such as one from Cadbury’s World, one from the Coronation Street Visitors Centre in Blackpool, one from Jersey Lavender and one from The German Underground Hospital in Jersey which was used in the war, I also have one from Madam Tussauds.

I have got many I have collected as I have come across them such as two advertising Walkers Crisps, one of Weetabix, one of Mobil Oil, one of Branston Pickle and many more.  I have some advertising Marks & Spencer, Hotpoint, Kodak and a few others.

As I have become older I have just started to collect limited edition vehicles.  Although I have only got 87 cars at the moment, it looks more when they are displayed on the shelves in my room.  Over the past few years I have collected a special 24 Carat Gold Plated set of classics from the 60’s consisting of a Austin 7 Mini, a Ford Anglia 105E, and a Morris Minor Traveller.

I have a limited edition of 3000 of the Public Services Collection of vehicles, from British Coal, Water Works, Post Office Telephones, British Rail, Gas Light and Coke and the Royal Mail.

I have a few other rather nice limited edition one’s such as a 1910 Ford Model T Coupe (Tin Lizzie) which was the world’s most produced one design car, which was bought for me last Christmas from The National Motor Museum Mint.  I have a 1950’s Green Austin A35, a Morris Minor Convertible, a VW Beetle and a Triumph Spitfire Mark II, all of which were quite expensive.

Someone gave me a Mr Bean Mini from the TV Series, which was on TV from 1989 – 1995, and a Darling Buds of May 1926 Rolls Royce 20hp Landaulet from the TV Series.  I have a Golden Jubilee 1952 –2002 (limited edition of 5,100) vehicle which I had from Lledo and a rainbow striped Mini of which the paint work was designed by designer Paul Smith for the London Motor Show in 1998.

I have a Royal Mail Millennium Collection of four vehicles (past, present and future) in celebration of motoring history, which I collected over the year of 2000 from Royal Mail.  I also have a Formula One Ferrari, which my sister bought for me from Monte Carlo.

My favourite cars at the moment are my James Bond 007 Aston Martin DB5, with the Silver Birch finish, which is a 1.24 scale replica of the 1964 car used in the Goldfinger film.  It has rotating number plates, bullet proof rear shield and a ejector seat. After the film Paul McCartney of the Beatles was the first person to put the DB5 on the road, therefore David Brown (hence DB) was only to happy to manufacture the cars.  It was also used in the film Thunderball. My other favourite is my 1962 Corvette with opening doors and bonnet.

I have a model of a “Vanguards Gold” Black Caterham Super Seven which is a limited edition of 3000.

I enjoy collecting the cars but its nice when I receive them in my Christmas stocking or for my birthday as some of them can be expensive.

Judith Goredema’s Story

Hello, I’m Judith and I am a student Social worker on placement at ACE.

I have worked as a support worker for adults in residential care and in NHS hospitals for the past 10 years.  During that time I studied health and social care and also access to social work.  In order to carry on making a positive difference in people’s lives I needed to gain more knowledge and experience.  I decided to study BA (Hons) Social Work as it offers both theory classroom based learning and practical experience.  ACE kindly gave me the opportunity to do 100 days of supervised direct practice under the care of experienced advocates.

ACE is a user led organisation so I can also learn from people who have real life experiences of using health and social care services.  I am learning a lot of skills such as relating to people in an empowering and self-centred way and my values are being challenged.  I have to keep reflecting on my practice as it is through real placement experience like this that social work students can become true workers who are sensitive to people’s needs.

I have never had a dull day at ACE.  This Placement has given me the opportunity to interact with other professionals and learn more about how to work effectively in a multi-agency environment. It’s one thing to hear in college about what advocates,  police officers or housing officers do, but quite another to work together to support people. Through this placement I will get to know what everyday practice is really like and will be able to make informed career decisions.   My future plans involve working with people in Community Mental Health Trusts.
